La Vanguardia entrevista Carles Surià en La Contra
La Contra Carles Surià

I am 39 years old. I am from Vilanova i la Geltrú. Married, two children. I analyze geological disturbances, artificial radiations and toxics that can pollute the air. I perceive little capacity to solve major problems. EU sails more for energy efficiency than for our health.

Are the houses more polluted than the street?

Considering that people in cities spend much more time indoors than outdoors, we end up absorbing far more toxics indoors than outdoors.

I thought I was safe at home.

If you go to the supermarket you can read the list of food ingredients, but the composition labeling of a piece of furniture is less strict and that of an appliance…non-existent. Lack of regulation.

Is a piece of furniture toxic?

If it is only made of wood and protected with oils, stains or natural waxes, it is not. But depending on which varnish may contain formaldehyde and other volatile substances … and that furniture is releasing harmful pollutants.

The conglomerate is everywhere.

Choose the furniture with the least amount of glues because they are the main emitters of toxics in a house. And if you choose one that is glued, like all conglomerates, make it low solvent or better without solvents.

How long do queue emissions last?

Dozens of years. And choose upholstery, curtains, carpets and rugs that are not synthetic. Its electrostatic charge raises dust and causes allergies. Avoid off-gassing of chemical cleaning products. Best ecological. And avoid solvent-filled paints that emit toxins day after day.

So many things!

Well, imagine how the mixture of all these toxins affects our bodies.

And we are surrounded by cables.

Cables can be shielded, which do not emit electrical pollution, or cables such as those common in Spain, which emit an electric field around them. We are also surrounded by routers, wifi, cordless phones….

With what consequences?

These devices emit electromagnetic waves that affect the nervous, hormonal and immune systems, and the toxins accumulated in the air and dust in indoor spaces can cause allergies and chronic diseases.

Are you not exaggerating?

Nowadays we sleep in the center of an electromagnetic field: lamps and sockets next to the bed, the cell phone, the television, the radio alarm clock, the intercom for babies….

I understand.

And if, in addition, we would take into account subway water currents or fissures in the subsoil, we would avoid many sleep disorders and fatigue. The Romans already avoided building on them, but today they are not taken into account.

What does the science say?

Above a fissure the gamma rays and neutrons find an upward exit and the increase in radioactivity is measurable.

It speaks to issues we do not consider.

Lack of concentration, fatigue and stress may be caused by an increase in energy received from the environment.

Meaning?

Electromagnetic waves, electric fields, magnetic fields. Now 5G will arrive, whose antennas will be added to the existing ones. Where is the limit of our body?

¿…?

Even so, if you make your home a place with few toxins and little radiation, the body manages to regenerate itself.

What happens in the offices?

It is surprising how little awareness there is, but it has been proven that if you make the work environment as free of toxins and radiation as possible, the staff is more relaxed and therefore performs better. Aspects such as light are very little taken care of and are essential.

What about light?

The EU banned incandescent and now halogen lights, so we are left with LEDs, which from an energy point of view are the most efficient, but have a very strong blue peak.

And how does it affect us?

Blue corresponds to the first rays of the morning, it is a light that activates us, the body begins to produce adrenaline and stops producing melatonin. If you have led lighting in an office or school with this strong blue component all day long, you are over-activating, exciting, children and workers.

Which lighting is ideal?

In the future, it will change throughout the day: from blue to red, imitating the exterior on the inside. But since that is still complicated today, it is better to reduce the blue component that can also affect the health of our retina.

Follow me in explaining how to protect us.

The bedroom should be as clean as possible from pollutants of all kinds, take care of fabrics and banish appliances.

But you’re left with the plugs.

In Germany they manufacture devices that are installed next to the circuit breaker and when you turn off the light and there is no consumption they reduce the mains voltage. And replace your radio alarm clock, which in addition to the electric field produces a magnetic field, with a battery-operated one.

Curious recommendation.

The WHO confirmed that household magnetic fields greater than 400 nanoTesla are potentially carcinogenic. These values can be measured next to a radio alarm clock, right where we put our head when we sleep.
